Step 1: Download the Kelp Forest Infosheet & Clip Art FREE pdf
The Info sheet answers questions about kelp forests. Read the information and cut out the clip art to hang on your kelp forest.
Here are two of my favorite pieces of clip art for this project!
Step 3: Choose a place where you will create your indoor kelp forest
You can make your kelp forest anywhere. We made ours under our kitchen table. You can also hang it from the ceiling and make really long streamers to the floor.
Step 4: Rip or cut a few pieces of streamer to decide how long you want your kelp forest to be
Depending on where you hang your kelp forest, you will need different lengths of paper. Therefore, there is no set length that you have to measure.
Step 5: Hang your kelp forest
There is also no set number of strips of streamers that you will need. It is up to you. We taped strips until it looked like a little kelp “fort” the kids could play in.
Here is a quick video of our Kelp Forest “fort.”
Step 6: Tape the clip art cut outs to your kelp forest
We did not do this step for our project at home, but I have done it before in my classroom. My students had such a great time creating an indoor kelp forest that they decided to paint a kelp forest mural on my classroom wall!
If your kids are older, you can ask them where they think the animals and plants belong in the kelp forest and have them place them there. You could also do some more research and have them add more animals and plants and learn about the different parts of the kelp forest, such as the canopy, understory, etc.
