Rock and Gem Dig Kit Introduction

This Smithsonian Rock and Gem Dig kit was a blast!  This is a great combination of science and fun.  The Smithsonian puts this out, so you know you are getting a great science kit.  Jack and Lila were able to pretend they were little geologists digging for gems!

This information sheet about the Smithsonian was included.  It was incredibly interesting and I learned a lot from it.  We are now finally going to plan a trip to Washington D.C.

The unboxing video!

Here is our exciting unboxing video!

Having fun exploring this kit…

Let’s get digging!  What was really nice about this kit was that the clay was very soft and easy to dig in.  Jack really likes doing these types of activities, but sometimes they are so hard to dig into that he gets frustrated.  This kit had the perfect amount of challenge for him and Lila could even help too.

We have struck gems!

We found 11 gems, now we have to identify them.  We used the guide provided.  We tried the streak plate, but none of the gems seemed to leave a mark.  We found out that almost all minerals leave a mark, but some can be colorless.

I think we have to do some more research, but this is what we think we got.
