Tinker Crate Flashlight Introduction

Our Tinker Crate flashlight delivery was the first Tinker Crate box we received. We had no idea what to expect except that it would be an awesome STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) project. We had no idea we would be making a flashlight out of a cardboard box!

Tinker Crate is a monthly subscription for children ages 8 and up.  It focuses on STEM topics.  Jack only recently turned 5, so doing these projects with him would lead to certain frustration.  I recruited my Goddaughter Ashley to try out these experiments.  She is very smart, determined, and extremely interested in learning new things.  Therefore, she is the perfect student for this subscription!

Our unboxing video!

The first delivery was sent to Ashley a few days ago.  Here is a video showing the exciting unboxing!

I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive about this project.  I did not know what to expect and I really hoped Ashley was excited about it and would enjoy it.  As soon as we figured out what was in the box, I knew something positive was in store for both her education and self confidence.  She was so excited to have the opportunity to do something that would challenge her and that she could feel proud of.  I could tell we were going to be finishing this project in one sitting because Ashley wasn’t going to give up until it was complete and functional!

Luckily, Tinker Crate sends all the materials you need to complete your project.  They also send very easy to follow instructions.  I am going to nickname this “the Goldilocks project” because it was not too easy so it held Ashley’s attention well but it was not too hard that it frustrated her.

Working on the Tinker Crate flashlight…

We immediately got to work on the flashlight.  Ashley dove right in and followed the instructions.  She learned new vocabulary such as breadboard, capacitor, circuit, and LED.

Here, we were not even half way through, and we could test the flashlight to see if we had completed all the steps properly.  Drum roll…

Now it was time to put the flashlight into the box.

Here it is!  Ashley made a functional hand crank LED flashlight!!!  This project was perfect and I was very happy with it.   It took just the right amount of time to hold an eight-year old’s attention and the instructions were clear.  Parents and/or caregivers must be there to give help, guidance, and supervision but they do not have to do the entire project themselves because the child is bored or frustrated.  We had so much fun with our first month’s Tinker Crate flashlight delivery, we can’t wait for month 2!
