Step 1: Make the “Dirt”
We used vanilla pudding, but chocolate would be better. Make a package of instant chocolate pudding and layer half it in a dish of your choice, preferably a glass dish. Put about half of a package of Oreos into a large baggie, seal it tight, and hit it with a meat tenderizer or rubber mallet to break up the cookies. Make sure you use the flat end of the meat tenderizer or you will have a big mess on your hands!
Layer half of the cookies onto the pudding, the add the rest of the pudding on top. Put the rest of the cookies on top to end up with pudding–>cookies–>pudding–>cookies.
Stick a few gummy worms into the layers and you have edible “dirt!” As you can see Lila LOVED it!
Step 2: Make the “Sand”
We used significantly more items to make our sand look like a beach scene than we did to make our dirt look like, well, dirt. Feel free to decorate your sand however you want. Most likely it will be easiest to use whatever beach related items you find in the candy aisle.
Make the vanilla pudding following the directions on the package and pour all of it into a glass dish.
Prepare the pudding and cookies just like you made the dirt, except now you are using vanilla pudding and Nilla Wafers.
You only need one layer of the pudding and the cookies for the sand.
Step 3: Add the water and other beach features
It was pretty difficult to find plain blue cotton candy. Most of it comes mixed with pink. It was pretty easy to separate, however, if you wanted to make this into a science lesson, you could add the pink too and talk about red tides!
Definitely have some friends on hand when you decide to make both of these recipes, because you will have a lot of sweets in the house! We brought ours to a park where we met a bunch of friends after school and they were very happy to “sample” some of our beach.
We added these candies, but I really wanted to use cocktail umbrellas. I couldn’t find them in the store, so I added a link to them here from Amazon because, of course, Amazon has everything!
