Introduction to Boogers and Wounds

This is another combination of two enrichment projects, boogers and wounds.  It begins by making green slime that look like boogers and ends with making some cool fake wounds!

Homemade Boogers

What!? Homemade boogers!?  That is totally gross, and that is why my 5-year old son absolutely loved this project!  Without even realizing it, Jack was learning about the science of polymers and the biology of boogers.  Polymers are chemical compounds formed from long chains of the same molecule (monomer) group, repeating over and over.

Jack and Lila have been collecting these The Ugglys Pet Shop figures and they are gross.  Some of them have boogers coming out of their nose dripping down to the floor!  These boogers complemented the figures well!

Play with the Boogers! But don’t eat it or stick it up your nose!

The solution is safe to play with but don’t eat the boogers and wash your hands when you are finished. (We should all know these rules when it comes to boogers anyway, right? 🙂

boogers2

Oh no!  They are gonna get slimed with boogers!!

Discuss how it works

Elmer’s glue mixed with water makes a polymer called polyvinyl acetate.  The contact solution, which contains borate, is a material that holds the polymer chains of glue together to make the solution thicker so it becomes something like a thick, slimy booger!

Fake Wounds

Making fake wounds is a great way to learn about the human body in a fun, safe, hands-on way.  You can also keep this recipe for next Halloween!

Materials List for Fake Wounds

wounds1
1 fingerful of petroleum jelly
-1 toothpick
-bowl
-1 tissue
1 pinch of powdered cocoa
three drops of red food coloring

Make your fake wound

You can find this recipe for making a fake wound on the awesome website Grossology.org.

Begin by putting the petroleum jelly in a small bowl.  Add the red food coloring and mix with a toothpick.  This is beginning to look a little gross…

Add the cocoa powder and stir again with the toothpick.

wounds4

Rip a small piece of thin tissue into a rectangle and use it as a base for your wound.  Decide where you are going to put your fake wound and lather up!  Be careful, because as the wound is sitting on your skin, the petroleum jelly will begin to heat up and will start melting off your body, ahhhh!
